Letter Writing Campaign to Support Cleveland STEM High School

A letter writing campaign has been set up by a group of concerned Cleveland PTSA parents to let SPS know that the Cleveland community is not okay with proposed budget cuts, enrollment cap, and loss of 3.5 full time positions at our school. Here is some background information and a link to the letter writing campaign.

Seattle Public Schools is funding Cleveland for only 660 students next year, forcing budget cuts that will have devastating impact our our school community, including a massive loss of 3.5 teachers. This means bigger class sizes and less class offerings for our students (including AP classes) and impacts to sports, clubs, and other activities.

As Principal Lam stated, the school does not get funds for students that are in programs such as Running Start & Student Skill Center. CHS does not receive any funding for students that are not in their seats full time. For instance, if a student goes to Skill Center in the morning, then returns to school for lunch, attend their afternoon classes, and receives tutoring at CASH. The school doesn’t receive any funding or resources for those students.

This makes no sense as we have a waitlist of hundreds of students and over 500 people attended open house for prospective students and families. Why is Seattle Public Schools capping enrollment at Cleveland High School and other option schools? Some say that SPS has always wanted to close choice schools. CHS Alumni mentioned that Queen Anne High school was closed down, sold off, and now are condos.

We need your help to make a stand against what is going on at our school. One way in doing that is participating in our letter writing campaign.

Instructions: Click the button below to be taken to the letter writing site. The Cleveland community showed up in a big way at the March 12 school board meeting. Here are a few photos. Visit our Advocacy page to find out how you can help with this effort.
